Aesthetic tensions in the argentine un derground cinema. The case of The united family awaiting the arrival of Hallewyn

Abstract

The argentine underground filmmakers from the ‘70s tried to create a fictional cinema that mixed the artistic avant-gard with the socio-political meditation in an unprecedented way in national cinema. This problematic tension between both elements is comparable with some meditations that made up The Aesthetic Theory (2004), where Theodor Adorno points out a negative dialectical relationship between the autonomous elements of the art pieces and the heteronomous ones. This means: those elements that are inherent to art and those that belongs to the empirical world, and where it’s impossible to perceive an artistic work without each other. In this paper we aim to comprehend the relations between the experimentation with film resources —the autonomous— and reflection on the social world of the time —the heteronomous— present in the debut film by the underground director Miguel Bejo (The united family awaiting the arrival of Hallewyn).
