The two faces of Janus. The editing and design of Chileanliterary collections (1930-1970)

Abstract

The object of study of this project is the analysis of a representative corpus consisting primarily of book covers, as well as selected interior pages, from 60 book series produced by Chilean publishing houses between 1930 and 1970 and aimed at juvenile and adult audiences. The study addresses literary and poetry collections at the intersection of text and image. In this regard, the covers operate as gateways to the collections and their respective contents, directed toward an emerging mass culture undergoing progressive processes of literacy. Mediated by publishers, the collections examined respond to a broader framework that may be defined as the publishing industry; nevertheless, the vast majority of them originated in the capital city of Chile, which during this period functioned as a central hub for the nation’s creative industries. In order to carry out the selection and subsequent analysis of the collections, the study employs an interpretative matrix for the covers and a technical matrix for recording data related to each complete book specimen. The intersection between these two vectors enables a parameterization of the graphic system underlying the collections.
